Suggester says, "I just have to say that this is an amazing peice, not only it it well composed and great in that way, but the really tragical story behind this image shakes me to the core so much, I mean, those gasmasks are for kids, and that was a school. It's truly a tragical piece of history that burns into my mind. Well worth a notice!" Chernobyl Wallpaper 2 by *lordyo

Lots of cancer cases and radiation poisoning, yes. Not so many mutated people and babies though. And the immediate deaths during the disaster were actually very few - not counting the aftereffects.

Couple of reasons:
1) It's against the urbex rules: "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints."
2) Lots of dust, and you really don't know what's in it

Its not safe to take objects from Chernobyl, because they've been contaminated with radiation.

see the paint on the walls like "rolling up"...that's what happens to lead paint....

Could be. As I always say: There's more dangerous things there than radiation... lead paint, toxic mold, crumbling buildings, angry looters...

I don't get it. How owuld gas masks help against radiation? I understand they cover your face, but do they really help?

:iconlordyo:

No, they had nothing to do with the accident. It was probably a stash of gas masks in case of a chemical attack (it was the cold war, after all).

Gas mask help you by not breathing in any of the contaminated air- Radiation is extremely harmful to unprotected skin, imagine how damaging it could be if it got into your body.

I'm hoping that I can use this in a project of mine for a photoshop class. We have to take an image that we feel represents life and another that represents death and put them on a billboard. This is incredibly eerie and I would like to use it as my death picture.

This is a very eerie and frightening shot, no matter how petrified the place is. Just by how everything is so cluttered and decayed, you know that something tragic in a catastrophic scale took place several years ago. At first glace I thought those were limbs of baby dolls.

You have some pretty amazing pictures! I loved looking through you Flickr account and reading about it. It makes you wonder what was going on when this image was created. What happened to the kids... Why are all the masks left in this state... So many unanswered questions... Someday, I will go there :)
